Zola Mae Metcalf

Zola Mae Metcalf, age 95, of La Grande, died December 25, 2008 at her home. At the request of the family there will be no public services. Interment will be held in Washington state. Arrangements are entrusted to Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center.

Mrs. Metcalf was born on June 16, 1913, the daughter of Noah Webster and Florence (Conway) Downing in the Big Bend area in Washington state. She graduated from Wenatchee, Washington. She packed and checked apples, worked in a dress shop and Al's Grocery in Tonasket, Washington. Her first marriage was to Orvill Cecil McManus, with whom she had two children. He preceded her in death in 1972. In 1981 she married Joseph L. Metcalf and he preceded her in death in 1996. She moved to La Grande in 2005 to be near family.

Mrs. Metcalf was active in the Community Church in Tonasket and with a bible study group for many years. She enjoyed cribbage, cooking for her family, especially pies and cookies, was a Girl Scout leader and she collected miniatures. She enjoyed watching her son play sports and playing with her grandchildren. She loved the outdoors and spending time at the family owned cabin.

Survivors include her children, Jon and Jody McManus of La Grande and Nancy Smith of Beaverton; five grandchildren, Guy McManus, Erin Smith-Egglin, Heather McManus, Heidi McManus and Jon McManus; two great grandchildren, Beau McManus and Alicin Egglin, and another great granddaughter on the way; many adopted grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
