Yvonne Susan Mahood died June 1, 2007, in La Grande, Oregon at her son's home. A funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at Valley Fellowship on Palmer Street. Committal and interment will follow at the Grandview Cemetery. Viewing will be from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. on Monday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 7th Street.
Yvonne was born at Ballynafiegh, Northern Ireland on August 28, 1919 to Euphenia and Thomas Croft. In 1920 she sailed with her parents to Fall River, Massachusetts, as her father was an international football player. Returning to Northern Ireland she attended Park Parade School in Belfast. After graduating she enlisted in the Military Nursing service at Huddenfield Yorkshire where she trained in infectious disease.
She was involved in the Army Choral society in London and was active in taking care of hospital patients during WWII. In 1942 she married her sweetheart James Mahood in Belfast. She had injures to both legs so after the wedding she had to return to the hospital as a patient.
She received maternity leave in 1943 and 1947, after the birth of her two sons, then returned to the Army as a PSI and remained until 1957 when she and her family sailed to the United States. They resided in Union, Oregon, until 1995. During her time here she was employed by the doctors at Hot Lake; Don Demsy, Dr. Lacers and Dr. Frederick. She was a life member of the order of the Eastern Star; serving as Grand Chaplain in 1980, representative twice on cancer committees, and representative to Oklahoma. She was past Lady of the Keys at Nydia Temple Daughters of the Nile and past Chaplain at Ulster Green Memorial Lodge, Banbridge, Northern Ireland, as well as past Monitor of the Presbyterian Women's Association, Eastern Oregon.
Survivors include her sons and their spouses, Raymond and Beth Mahood of Milwaukie and Dennis and La Veda Mahood of La Grande; grandsons David, Shawn and James; granddaughters Donna and Daniale; brothers Harvey and David; sister Margaret; nieces Yvonne and Ann; brother-in-law Harry Barratt; and many great and great-great grandchildren. Her husband preceded her in death.
Those who wish may make contributions in memory of Mrs. Mahood to the Oregon Cancer Society or the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley.
