Winfield Herbert "Herb" Eales, 78, of Chandler, Arizona and formerly of La Grande died April 24. Burial was at the Valley of the Sun Mausoleum in Chandler. Mr. Eales was born August 11, 1926, to Ben and Ethel Eales in Hutchinson, Kansas. He was a pilot and a charter member of the Civil Air Patrol. He served two tours of duty in the Army Air Corps and Air Force. He graduated from the Kansas City College of Mortuary Science and worked as a funeral director and embalmer in Oregon and in Arizona. The family conducted a lottery to award the coveted position of pallbearer. He was an optimist, dreamer and hard worker who could fix anything and was always the life of the party.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene "Dolly", a sister and brother-in-law, Joan and John Blount of Medford; children, Linda Eales of Scottsdale, Arizona, Kathy and Dave Brady of Bullhead City, Arizona and Gene Eales of San Francisco; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren and other relatives.
