Warren Douglas Curry

August 1, 1928 — December 24, 2009

Warren Douglas Curry, age 81, of La Grande, died December 24, 2009 at a local care facility. A celebration of his life will be held May 29th, 11:00 am at the First Christian located on Penn Ave, in La Grande, OR.

Warren was born on August 1, 1928, the son of Douglas Michael and Frances Irene (VanDeventer) Curry in Douglas, Wyoming. He attended North Grade School and Douglas High School, graduating in 1946. He then attended Barnes Business College in Denver, Colorado. After leaving business college in April 1947 he moved to join his family in Portland. He worked for Meier and Frank Department Store from mid 1947 to August 1948. He joined the United States Navy where he served until July 26, 1952. He returned to Portland and Meier and Frank while attending night school at Northwest Broadcasting School and graduated on the summer of 1953. He moved to La Grande to enter the career of broadcasting at KLBM radio. On November 22, 1953 he married Margaret JoAnn Keith in Portland. The marriage later ended in divorce. On July 3, 1968 he married Cleo Jeannette (Wade) Bailey in La Grande. He retired from the radio station in August 1989.
After his retirement he became custodian for the First Christian Church and retired from that in July 1998. In August 1998 he accepted a position with Wal-Mart in La Grande to serve as a "People Greeter". In mid-August 2002 Warren was offered a position at the Red Cross Drug Store, his final function was to assist in delivering prescriptions.

In his many years of residence in La Grande he was involved with many charitable organizations including the March of Dimes, American Cancer Society, Easter Seals, American Heart Fund, New Day Enterprises for 20 years, the American Red Cross as a regular blood donor and serving as local blood chair for 32 years and served many years as a Trustee for Koinonia House. He was also a member of the Mavrick's Club. He was active with St. Peter's Episcopal Church for 27 years and then with the First Christian Church since 1981. His hobbies included his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.


Survivors include his children, Bonnie Kay Curry Theabolt of Enterprise, Connie Jean Curry of Coquille, Polly Rose Ann Curry Walker of Portland, Susan Christine Curry of Rogue River, Scott Douglas Curry of Kennewick, WA and Toni Gay Curry Jabson of Monticello, Illinois; daughters by friendship, Joni Petersen of Kila, Montana and Kris Petersen Rasmussen of La Grande; sister, Connie Irene Curry Grabhorn; seventeen grandchildren; thirteen greatgrandchildren; nephews, Bruce, Bart and Spencer Grabhorn; and other relatives and many friends.

Those who wish may make contributions in memory of Warren to the Koinonia House, Cove Christian Church Camp, New Day Enterprises, Habitat for Humanity or the American Red Cross in care of Daniels~Knopp, 1502 7th Street in La Grande.
