Walter James "Jim" Walker, 60, of La Grande, died April 17 at a local care center. At Jim's request, there will be no services.
Jim was born Nov. 20, 1950, at Sparta, Wis., to Walter Scott and Gladys Irene (Williams) Walker. He was raised and educated in Kinzua, then finished high school in Brookings. Jim attended Southern Oregon University.
Those who knew him say he was an exceptional baseball player and wrestler. Jim was employed as a millworker and pipeline worker.
Jim served in the United States Army. Before being honorably discharged in 1977, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for outstanding meritorious service against hostile forces in the Republic of Vietnam.
Jim never married. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. One of his favorite activities was gold prospecting. He collected guns and was an artist, winning a blue ribbon at the Union County Fair for a painting.
Surviving are one sister and two brothers, Irene Gilbert of La Grande, John Walker of Eatonville, Wash., and Doug Walker of Dallas; one aunt; and eight nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
