Virginia Elizabeth Campbell

November 12, 1911 — January 9, 2004

Virginia Elizabeth Dadisman Campbell, age 92, passed away peacefully in Cove, Oregon on January 9, 2004. She was born in Wichita, Kansas on November 12, 1911 to Elizabeth Elvira Griggs and John Hunter Dadisman. She is survived by two sons, John Douglas Campbell of La Grande, Oregon and Bruce Scott Campbell of Columbia, South Carolina; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Her husband, Paul Scott Campbell and her youngest son, Robert Duncan Campbell, preceded her in death.

From the age of 2 months until she was 13 she lived in China attending an American school managed by her mother. Her father, who was appointed to China as a Secretary of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), was killed in a boating accident after their first year there, but her mother chose to stay on. Her only sibling, a brother, died as an infant and is buried in China.

She returned with her mother to Petaluma, California, finished high school and subsequently her Bachelor's degree at the University of California, Berkeley. She married Paul in 1935 and they lived in Eureka, California, Portland, Oregon, Klamath Falls, Oregon, Campbell, California and La Grande, Oregon.

She was an active member of the United Methodist Church, loved music, traveling and gardening. She helped her husband as cook at the Diamond Lake YMCA summer camp when they lived in Klamath Falls. She taught mathematics in California in her later years.

A memorial service for Virginia will be held at the La Grande Methodist Church at 4th and Spring on January 24, 2004 at 2:00 p.m.

Memorial gifts may be directed to (1) the United Methodist Church, either here in La Grande or in Campbell, California, or (2) the East Bay Committee of the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia, or (3) the Metropolitan Board of the YMCA of Santa Clara County.
