Violet Mae Cook, age 82, of La Grande, died March 16, 2011 at a local care facility. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, March 22, 2011at 11:00 a.m. at the Island City Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center.
Mrs. Cook was born on January 28, 1929, the daughter of Alfred J. and Alice (Earnest) Johnson in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She began work as an operator for the telephone company when she graduated from high school in California. She later transferred to Beaverton where she could be near her daughter. In 1976 she transferred to La Grande and on January 28, 1976 she married Jerry Cook in Reno, Nevada.
Mrs. Cook loved to fish for crappie and catfish on the Snake River and playing the slot machines. In her younger years she enjoyed sewing, especially for her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry Cook of La Grande; daughter, Judy Hall of Portland; step-daughters, Frances Williamson of La Grande and Susan M. Cook of Milton-Freewater; brothers, Jerry Johnson and James Johnson, both of La Grande and Dale Johnson of Salem; two granddaughters, Heather Adamson and Jennifer Cuniff both of Portland; two step-grandsons, Ryan Williamson and Nathan Williamson, both of La Grande; two great grandchildren; sisters, Lorraine Nielsen of Yuba City, California and Frances Buck of Clackamas, Oregon and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and two brothers.
