Verna Stauffer

November 18, 1914 — December 29, 2012

Verna Stauffer, age 98, of La Grande, died December 29, 2012 at her home. A funeral will be held on Friday, January 4, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center, 1502 7th Street in La Grande. Verna was born on November 18,1914, the daughter of Starley B. and Laura Ella (Lentz) Lee in Red Rock, Texas. She later came to La Grande and she worked as the manager of Western Union Office, then purchased Char-bon-do Ice Cream Shop which was located across the street. from the old post office. When the store was sold she became the program clerk for the USDA, which was housed in the Post Office, until her retirement. On May 26, 1967 she married Henry Alvin Stauffer in La Grande. Verna was an active member of the First Christian Church. She was also a member of the OES Hope Chapter #13, Eagles Auxiliary #259, Nydia Temple Daughters of the Nile, Jewel Rebecca Lodge in Summerville, Beta Sigma Phi in La Grande, NARFE Local Chapter 1860 and was a Pink Lady with the GranAuxiliary. She was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow through the local Rotary Club. She was known for her homemade peanut brittle. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, crafts, reading, and Bingo.


Survivors include her children, Perry D. Bauer of Houston, Texas, Doris I. Rahn of Fresno, California and Bonnie L. Coffman of La Grande; fourteen grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; sister, Sue McBride of Springfield; step-sister, Jean Benson of Palm Desert, California;and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Henry,, brother, Harvey B. Lee, step-brother, Col. Roland K. McCoskrie, son, Charles D. Bauer, step-daughter, Virginia Camp and grandson, Raymond C. Rahn.
