Velma Margaret Speckhart

December 26, 1917 — October 13, 2003

Velma Margaret Speckhart, age 85, of La Grande, died Monday, October 13, 2003 at the Canterbury Crest Care Center in Tigard, Oregon. Graveside services and interment will be held at the Bluff Hall Cemetery in Adams County, Illinois in early November. A service will be held in La Grande, Oregon in December.

Mrs. Speckhart was born on December 26, 1917, the daughter of John J. and Nellie (Ruby) Speckhart in Bluff Hall, Adams County, Illinois. She graduated from Quincy High School in Quincy, Illinois and later from Western Illinois University with a degree in Education. She taught school for eleven years in and near Quincy, Illinois. On February 2, 1952 she married Herbert Speckhart,
and they made their home in La Grande. He preceded her in death in June of 1974. She had recently moved to the care facility in Tigard.

Mrs. Speckhart was a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist in La Grande. She was also held memberships in the Blue Mtn. Gem Club, the Two Rock Extension Unit and the American Association of University Women.

Survivors include her step grandchildren Mary Koza and Joanne Lowry-Parsons, both of La Grande; six step great grandchildren; six step great great grandchildren; brothers, Charles Speckhart and J. Russel Speckhart, both of Quincy, Illinois; and other relatives and friends. Her step daughter, Helen Jean Speckhart preceded her in death.
