Sadly, Thad J. Hilliard, beloved son of the late Herman and Grace (Kohler) Hilliard, and beloved brother of Beulah, David and of sister-in-law, Bonne Hilliard, as well as beloved friend of many, passed away unexpectedly on January 22, 2007.
Thad was born on June 12, 1949, in Sharon, Pennsylvania and was graduated from Penn State University. Following college, Thad served in the Peace Corps and spent three years in Guatemala spreading good will and teaching Guatemalans more productive methods of harvesting crops. Upon returning to the States, Thad earned a two year Forestry degree and then settled in La Grande. He loved cross-country skiing, as well as camping and hiking in the Eagle Cap Wilderness.
Thad was a true philosopher, as well as could converse on any subject. The effect of Thad's kindness can be articulated best by quoting American author Washington Irving, who said "A kind heart is a fountain of gladness, making everything in its vicinity freshen into smiles." Thad's specialness, love and presence in the world shall forever be felt and lovingly cherished by the countless lives he so distinctively and compassionately touched.
The family's funeral service will be held at Loveland Funeral Chapel. Contributions in memory of Thad may be made to the Christians' Children Fund or to the Wilderness Society.
