Ted Wilson Willoughby, 80, of La Grande, died September 22, 2012, surrounded by his family. A private burial will be held at the Island City Cemetery. A Celebration of Life service will held on Thursday, September 27, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of LaGrande. Viewing for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center, 1502 7th Street. Ted was born on April 4, 1932, the son of Lewie R. and Waneta (Reich) Willoughby in Medford, Oregon. He started his schooling in Medford and later moved to Ashland where he graduated from high school in 1951. He served with the United States Navy during the Korean War on the USS Tawasa. After his honorable discharge, he attended Oregon State. In 1954 he married his high school sweetheart, Joan Day-Anderson and they made their home and started their family in Corvallis where he worked as the beef cattle herdsman for the University. They moved to Keating and ranched for many years before relocating to Prineville when he went to work in the banking industry as an Agricultural Field Representative covering Central and Eastern Oregon, later transferring to La Grande where he worked until his retirement in 1994. He was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder and Trustee. He was also a member of the Oregon Cattleman's Association, Crooked River Roundup Board and delivered Meals on Wheels for several years. He enjoyed camping, fishing, boating, traveling, horses, ranching, hunting, hiking, backpacking into the Wallowas and Eagle Cap Wilderness, and family reunions.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Willoughby of La Grande; children, Debbie Schappert of Hillsboro, Laura and Brian Barney of Prineville, Sharon and Pete Nelson of La Grande and Carol and Russ George of La Grande; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister Donna and brother-in-law, Howard Bledsoe; sister-in-law, Connie Willoughby; brother-in-law, Gaylord Horton and his wife Marlene; brother-in-law, Ron Day-Anderson; brother-in-law, Oryln Jurey; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bob Willoughby, sister Mary Lou Horton and sister-in-law, Sybil Jurey.
