Sylvia Edith Watne

November 1, 1913 — February 4, 2003

Sylvia Edith Watne, age 89, of La Grande, died Tuesday, February 4, 2003 at the Grande Ronde Hospital.


Graveside services will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the Island City Cemetery with Pastor Gary Hood of the Pioneer Park Church of God officiating. Friends may call on Saturday from 11:30 until 12:30 p.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley


Mrs. Watne was born on November 1, 1913, the daughter of Harley Marvin and Edith Pearl (Shelts) Courtney in Wallowa County, Oregon. She graduated from Lostine High School and on November 3, 1933 she married Maynard Watne in Lostine. They moved to La Grande in 1951 and he preceded her in death on June 29, 1991. After his death she moved to College Place to be near her sister and returned to La Grande in November of 2002.


Mrs. Watne worked as a cook for the coffee shop in the Sacagawea Hotel and later for Eastern Oregon University until retiring in 1978. She was a devoted mother and was very family oriented.


Survivors include her sons, Howard Maynard Watne of La Grande and Jack Marvin Watne of South China, Maine; nine grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; brother, Lowell Courtney of Enterprise; sister, Lavina Mae Snively of College Place, Washington; and other relatives and friends. A son, Wayne Watne and a daughter, Nancy Pearl Watne preceded her in death.
