Susan Jane Harsin, age 67, of La Grande, died Friday, June 30, 2006 in Woodburn. A memorial mass will be held at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church on Wednesday, July 5, 2006 at 2:00 p.m.
Mrs. Harsin was born on August 22, 1938, the daughter of Jim and Elizabeth (Nolten) Gooding in Salem, Oregon. Her hometown was St. Paul and she graduated from St. Mary's Academy in Salem. She moved to La Grande when she was in her early 20's and was married to Darwin Harsin on July 24, 1961.
Mrs. Harsin was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church and St. Jude's Altar Society. She was also a member of the UPRR Junior Old Timers and Old Timers, the Eagles Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was an ombudsman for the local nursing homes for a number of years and an honorary member of FFA. She loved to read and her family and church were her main activities. She suffered with phantom pains for the last 25 years of her life but was always a champion for the underdogs and helped many people over the years.
Survivors include her husband, Darwin Harsin; son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Carrie Harsin; grandson, Spencer Harsin, all of La Grande; one brother and two sisters and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by one sister.
In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to St. Luke's Hospital which will be used for the Neonatal ICU and the flight crew. They can be made in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 7th Street, La Grande.
