Stephen D. Callender

Stephen D. Callender, age 72, passed away Monday, September 12th in La Grande OR.

Stephen was born to Daniel and Naomi (Wells) Callender in La Grande.  He graduated from La Grande High School in 1968, and on August 30,1974, he married Joann Gregory his wife of 48 years.

Stephen started working for Boise Cascade in 1968 and worked there until his retirement in 2009. During his many years there he was trained on all the jobs in the yard department and was a member of the safety committee.

Growing up at the base of Mt. Emily, the hills were his backyard and he travelled and explored them extensively. Being an avid outdoorsman, Stephen enjoyed fishing and loved hunting and hiking.  When his children were young, he helped coached football, girls powder-puff football, and soccer.

He was a prolific baker of Christmas cookies, shipping them to friends and family across the states, and in his prime making 241 dozen in one season.

Surviving relatives include his wife Joann, of La Grande; children, Carrie Shelton of Milton-Freewater, Oregon, Amos Callender of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, Zack Callender of La Grande; 8 grandchildren; and a sister, Elsie Pellissier of Baker City.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 1st at Riverside Park in La Grande, Oregon from 10 am to noon.
