Spencer Fredrick Mastrude

April 29, 1922 — February 14, 2007

Spencer Fredrick Mastrude, age 84, of La Grande died Wednesday, February 14, 2007 at a local care facility. A funeral will be held on Monday, February 19, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Mr. Mastrude was born on April 29, 1922, the son of Fredrick and Agnes (Lozier) Mastrude in Joseph, Oregon. He was educated in both Joseph and La Grande graduating from high school in Enterprise. He worked with his father, farming and ranching for a few years and then did some work in the logging industry. He later went to work in heavy construction, mostly as a cat skinner. He married Nellie Hanby in 1941 and they had two children Peggy and Joe. They were later divorced. He met Guelda Lampman in La Grande and they were married in 1956 in Douglas, Wyoming. His work took them to New Mexico, Arizona, California, Washington and Oregon. Mr. Mastrude was an avid fisherman. He enjoyed his family and playing cards of all kinds, especially Pinochle. He will be remembered for his love of telling stories. His wife preceded him in death on February 3, 2006.

Survivors include his children, Peggy Johnson of La Grande, Joe Mastrude of Lake Stevens, Washington, Billie Mae Carpenter of Magalia, California, and Alvin Mastrude of Island City; sixteen grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; brothers, Selwin Mastrude of Baker City and Gene Mastrude of Westport, Washington; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Alan Mastrude and a son, Michael Mastrude.
