Sara Lee Horton

August 9, 1936 — February 14, 2004

Sara Lee Horton was born in Portland, Oregon on August 9, 1936 and deceased on February 14, 2004 at St. Mary's Medical Center, Walla Walla. Washington with complications related to cancer.

Sara attended school in and around Molalla, Oregon, attending elementary school at Rural Dell and graduating from Molalla High in 1953.

She then attended Willamette University and graduated cum laude with a degree in French literature. She then taught high school in Chalon, France, Myrtle Point, Oregon and Grant High School, in Portland. In 1970 she received a Masters degree in Library Science from the University of Oregon. Also in 1970 she came to La Grande as an elementary school teacher and school librarian working at Greenwood, Willow, and Island City schools until her retirement in 1983.


In her retirement years she did extensive reading, walking, and volunteer work.
She worked as a volunteer in public health, The Center for Human Development, The Hospital Auxiliary, and also served at senior meals. She was a member of First Christian Church, attended First Presbyterian Church, was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, The Oregon Retired Teacher's Association, and the Hospital Auxiliary.

Sara is survived by her brother, James Horton of Redding California, her nephews Randall Horton of Los Gatos, Ca. and Jeffrey Horton of Victoria B.C. , and also a niece, Suzanne Mathieu of Redwood, City, CA. She is also survived by three grand nephews and one grand niece.


Sara was a truly intelligent, well-read, caring person who often considered the needs of other above her own. She will truly be missed by all who knew her and loved her.


Her funeral service will be February 21, 2004 at 4:00p.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley and she will be buried in La Grande. Those who wish may make contributions in her memory to the Presbyterian Church in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley.
