Ruth Nina Carmen

Ruth Nina Carman, 91, lifelong Wallowa rancher, died July 22 at her home. At her request, services will be private.

Ruth was born May 28, 1919, to F.H. "Fritz" and Nina (Miller) Weinhard in Wallowa. She attended school in Wallowa, graduating in 1937.

On July 21, 1937, she married Hoy Carman. Together, they raised five children and ran Hereford and Angus cattle at their ranch in Wallowa.

At the time of Hoy's death in 1996, they had been married for nearly 60 years.

Throughout her life, one of Ruth's greatest loves was riding her horse. She also enjoyed collecting antiques and quilting. She attended the United Methodist Church in Wallowa and volunteered at the Wallowa Food Bank.

She is survived by her sister, Anne Oveson of Wallowa; sons, Hoy F. Carman of Davis, Calif., and Kent Carman of Wallowa; daughters, Judith Bechtel of Salem and Karen Carman of Vancouver, Wash.; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grand children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hoy; son, Garth Carman; and sisters, Mary Zahm and Margaret McCrae
