Russell L. Miller, 81, of Wallowa, died peacefully July 4 surrounded by his family at his home. A funeral service was held this morning at Wallowa Christian Church. Gravesite military services followed.
Russell was born July 14, 1928, to Ray and Etha Merle (Sannar) Miller near Wallowa on the Diamond Prairie. After graduating from Wallowa High School in 1946, he joined the U.S. Army as a PFC military police officer in January 1947 and served in Panama until May 1948. He re-enlisted in October 1950 to serve his country during the Korean War. He was discharged with honors in April 1952.
Russell worked at the Wallowa Railroad, Bates Mill in Wallowa and Boise Cascade in Elgin until his retirement in 1991.
Russell's hobbies and interests were many, but he truly enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapshooting, gardening and family outings to pick huckleberries and morels.
He is survived by his sister, Donna Baugh of Wister, Okla.; son, Neil Miller; daughter-in-law, Kristin Miller; a grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a stillborn sister; brothers, Weston and Raymond Miller; and his wife of 33 years, Barbara (Treadway) Miller.
