Roy Robert Sines

Roy Robert Sines, 88, of La Grande, died March 17 at a care center in La Grande. A private graveside service for family members will be held at the Entiat Cemetery in Entiat, Wash.

Roy was born May 20, 1922, to Henry Martin and Mary Gertrude (Wortman) Sines at Bozeman, Mont. He grew up in the Entiat Valley, Wash., and graduated from Entiat High School in 1940.

Roy enlisted in the military and served the country during World War II in the Army Air Force. He was stationed in the South Pacific during his military service. Roy married his sweetheart, Rachel Stanaway, on July 18, 1946, in Wenatchee, Wash.

While working for the U.S. Forest Service, Roy continued his education at Wenatchee Valley College. In 1960, he took his family to Pullman where he attended forestry school at Washington State University. He received his bachelor of science degree in forestry and range management in 1963.

Roy spent his entire working career as a forester for the U.S. Forest Service. He was district ranger for 10 years at Wallowa and district ranger for three years in La Grande.

Upon retirement, he was awarded for 38 years of government service. Roy was a member of the Society of American Foresters and the Society of Range Management.

After his retirement, Roy and his wife were active in volunteer service for the U.S. Forest Service.

They worked on botany surveys, tree-planting, collecting seed cones and were hosts for the U.S. Forest Service at the Kirkwood Ranch on the Snake River.

He served for several years on the ski patrol and as an avalanche control officer at Stevens Pass Ski Area in Washington.

Roy was an avid outdoorsman and taught each of his grandchildren to snow ski, hike the mountain trails and identify native plants found along the trails.

His family said, "Roy professed his love and belief to his heavenly Father as a young man and remained faithful in his personal love of God for over 70 years."

Roy is survived by his wife, Rachel; his children and their spouses, Joan and Thomas McNab of Bozeman, Jean and A.J. Kriwox of Jerome, Idaho, and Brian and Kim Sines of Island City; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three nieces; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings, Mildred Stockwell, Ralph Sines, Atha Lay and Russel Sines.
