Nadine was born on September 13, 1924, the daughter of Walter H. and Effie E. (Martin) Young in Imbler, Oregon. In 1940 she was able to be in the Rose Bowl Parade with the La Grande High School Band. She graduated from La Grande High School in 1942. She then worked at the Army Depot in Umatilla in electronics and radio. In 1943 she went into the US Cadet Nurses Corp at Good Samaritan Hospital graduating in 1946. After receiving her RN degree she worked in numerous hospitals.
On May 23, 1947 she married George E. "Gene" Rugg (a Marine) at El Toro Marine Corp Air Base, California. They moved many times over the years as her husband's career changes led them to OR, AK, HI, CA, WA, OK, ID and MT. She loved traveling and enjoying all the beauty and sites where ever she lived. She loved people and would help anyone in need. Nadine and her husband moved back to La Grande in 1991 when her mother became ill. During this time she took care of not only her mother, but her husband when his health was failing. A few years after their passing her health was also declining and she moved into the Grande Ronde Retirement Residence. She was happiest helping the other residents and loved walking the halls to visit whoever she met. She loved reading, especially history and music from the big band era. She loved dancing and playing cards, but most of all she loved her family and her years as a nurse. She was an excellent cook and could put anything together. She will always be remembered for her kindness and generosity to others.
