Rose "Catherine" Shelton, age 94 of La Grande, died Thursday, January 22, 2004 at a local care center. A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Island City Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Interment will follow at Grandview Cemetery. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Shelton was born on June 3, 1909, the daughter of Frank and Margaret Belle (Wildman) Buckley in Butte, Montana. She came to La Grande at the age of eight and was raised by an Aunt. She graduated from La Grande High School in 1928 and attended Eastern Oregon College and later graduated from Oregon Normal School in Monmouth, Oregon with a lifetime teaching certificate. She taught school for 2 years in rural Elgin and boarded with the Orie Becthel family and 2 years at Lower Cove School and board with Charlie and Verdie Gray. While there she met Lester Shelton. On March 4, 1933 she was married to Lester Shelton in Enterprise, Oregon. They lived on a farm in Lower Cove area from September 1933 until April 1989, at which time they sold the farm and moved to La Grande. She became a member of the LDS Church at the age of 91 and attended the La Grande 3rd Ward. Mrs. Shelton enjoyed feeding birds and deer, growing beautiful flowers and had a great love for cats and dogs. Her husband preceded her in death.
Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Applebee of La Grande; grandchildren, Janet Pryce of La Grande and Frank Seymour of California; two great-grandchildren, Brittany and David Pryce; brother, Ray Buckley of La Grande and other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the LDS Missionary Fund or Blue Mt. Humane Society in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 7th Street, La Grande, Oregon 97850.
