Ronald William 'Rocky' Hagan, age 85, of Cove, died Thursday, September 17, 2015 at a local care facility.
A funeral will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 23rd at 2:00 p.m. at Daniels-Knopp Funeral & Cremation Center in La Grande. Committal and Veterans honors will follow at the Cove Cemetery.
Rocky was born on July 12, 1930, the son of Paul L. and Bertha (Tatroe) Hagan in Des Moines, Iowa. When he was a teenager he worked as a cowboy in the Sand Hills of western Nebraska. He graduated from high school in January of 1948. On December 8, 1950 he married Beverly Elton in Omaha, Nebraska. He worked for the railroad for a time before joining the United States Air Force. He worked as a Military Policeman, with part of his service being in the Korean War. After 21 years he retired from the military and with some partners purchased the Cove swimming pool from Dean and Estelle Puckett, which he operated for 10 years. He then established R.W. Hagan and Sons Custom Harvesting, which he ran for 20 years.
He was a member of the Cove Methodist Church. He was a Mason for over 62 years and belonged to the Cove Masonic Lodge, Grande Ronde Valley Masonic Lodge, Hope Chapter Order of Eastern Star, Scottish Rite, Union County Shrine Club, he was a charter member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4060 and was a Life Member of the American Legion Post 43. In these organization he was a Past Master, Past Patron and Past District Commander. He was the charter president of the Cove Lions Club. And he served as Mayor of Cove in the 1970's.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly Hagan of Cove; children, Wayne and Elaine Hagan of Redmond, Washington, Mitchell and Zita Hagan of Redding, California and Michael Hagan of Clearfield, Utah; two grandsons; two granddaughters, sisters, Mariann Sheldon and Lois Curtis, both of Omaha, Nebraska; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by a brother Donald, his parents and two older sisters.
