Robert Calvin Teufel, 66, of Mount Vernon and formerly of La Grande, died April 20 at Blue Mountain Hospital in John Day.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Portland.
Robert was born April 4, 1942, to Robert and Marjorie (Corey) Teufel in Portland. Robert graduated from Beaverton High School in 1961 and later went on to serve two years in the Army as Private E-1, where he earned sharpshooter and expert rifle badges as well as good conduct and Vietnam service medals.
In 1966, Robert married Joyce Hayden in Beaverton. He later married Betty Holznagel in John Day in 2002.
Robert was employed with the City of La Grande for 20 years as the parks and recreation superintendent. He retired in 2000. Robert also ran a successful nursery business in La Grande.
Robert was an avid outdoorsman. Those who knew him considered him a jack of all trades. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, horseback/mule riding, rock hounding, propagating nursery stock, ATVing, raising racing pigeons, camping, traveling, playing games and cards. He was also affiliated with the Oregon Hunters Association, Eagles, Elks, American Racing Pigeon Union and was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. Those who knew him say he had a strong sense of morals and ethics.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Holznagel-Teufel of Mount Vernon; daughters, Traci Teufel Levay of Portland; sisters, Helen and her husband, Ron Tipton of Hillsboro, Marjorie Teufel of Keizer and Alice and her husband, Jack Harris of Cornelius; sister-in-law, Jean Wimberley of Austin, Texas; and a grandchild. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Marjorie Teufel; and his first wife, Joyce Hayden.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Lung Association or the American Cancer Association in care of Driskill Memorial Chapel, 241 S. Canyon Blvd., John Day 97845.
