Robert Lee Proffitt

April 5, 1930 — September 16, 2002

Robert Lee Proffitt, age 72, of La Grande, died Monday, September 16, 2002 at a local care facility.


A memorial service will be held on Monday, September 23, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley. Private interment will be held later.


Mr. Proffitt was born on April 5, 1930, the son of Aaron and Lily (Ogle) Proffitt in Baker City. He was educated in La Grande and served with the United States Army during the Korean conflict. His marriage to June Cook ended in divorce and he later married Marie Reiber Speer. She preceded him in death in 1998.


Mr. Proffitt worked for Van Patton Lumber Company for many years before starting his own roofing business in the 1970's. He was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed hunting and fishing. In his younger years he enjoyed cutting wood.


Survivors include his son, Robert Proffitt of Perry; step-daughters, Wilma Smith of Arkansas and Lois Kowalski of Alaska; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
