Robert Julius Gerber

Robert Julius Gerber, 76, of La Grande, died May 3 at a local care center.

At the request of the family, there will be no services.

Bob was born May 8, 1934, in Camden, N.J. His parents were Robert and Cecelia (Melvin) Gerber. He grew up in Camden, and after high school he attended Lewis Clark State College. He graduated from truck-driving school and received his commercial driver's license.

Bob married three times. He was first married to Beatrice Mae Hoyer, then Hattie Ollie Chase. His third marriage was to Lola Arlee Suitter.

Bob was a rancher, millwright and craftsman. His favorite activities included coin collecting, fishing, hunting and reading. He loved the outdoors.

Bob was active with Union County Senior Center. He helped raise nearly $10,000 for the senior center transit system, and, later the parking lot, for which he received recognition and several awards.

Bob is survived by his wife, Lola; children and their spouses, Edward and Melinda Gerber of Crestview, Fla., Earl Gerber, Virginia and Marin Trent of Guffy, Idaho, David L. Girrard of La Grande, Brian and Juliet Girrard of La Grande and Kenneth and Patricia Girrard of Ellensburg, Wash.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Cecelia.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Union County Senior Center.
