Robert C. Flanery passed away May 27, 2004 in Walla Walla, Washington at the age of 82. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley. Committal and interment will follow at the Summerville Cemetery.
Mr. Flanery was born September 15, 1921 to Della Clowers and Carl Flanery in Portland, Oregon. During World War II he was a Sgt. in the Medical Corps of the United States Army. He was very proud of his military service. After his honorable discharge he was employed by Montgomery Wards until his retirement in 1981.
On June 27, 1960 he married Edna Stowe and they have made their home in La Grande for the past 44 years. He was a devoted member of the American Legion and served as the local commander eleven times and as District #6 Commander for 6 years. He served many years of service and dedication to the Legion on the local, district and state levels. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge #142 in Portland and a member of the Eagles Lodge. He loved traveling, cooking and people.
He is survived by his wife, Edna Flanery of La Grande; step-daughter and her husband, Karrel and Wayne Johnson of Wallowa; grandchildren, Kerry & Darlene Johnson of Wallowa, Karin and Chris Nix of Hico, Texas, Kristi Johnson of Umatilla and Karl Johnson of Bend.
