Richard "Dick" E. Scott

Richard "Dick" E. Scott, 73, of Elgin, died Aug. 26 at Grande Ronde Hospital.

Services will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Tom McDowell Park in Elgin. Casual dress is requested. Services will be followed by a potluck dinner at the Elgin Stampede Hall. For information on the dinner, call Ione Scott at 437-0265 or 805-0254.

Richard was born May 30, 1936, to Joseph and Ella (Hobbs) Scott at home on Cricket Flats near Elgin, the seventh of 15 children.

Dick left high school early to travel to California in pursuit of car racing. Those who knew him say he has always been a tremendous mechanic who enjoyed working on cars, especially his Model A Ford.

He returned to Union County where he traveled extensively as a heavy equipment operator in both road construction and logging most all of his life. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who enjoyed the Northwest. He also took great pleasure in all of the time he spent gold mining in Alaska. He loved to read Western novels and was always surrounded by friends and family for large dinners and playing cards. Those who knew him say he was the first to offer help in times of need for anyone.

Dick is survived by companion, Becky Roberson; sons, Brent Coe of Vancouver, Wash., and Curtis Scott of Littleton, Colo; daughters, Betty Jean Church of Elgin, Dixie Walters of Carlton, Leticia "T.C." Cardenas of Pendleton, Shon Teel of Hermiston, Tasha Roberson of Tooele, Utah, and Luci Scott of La Grande; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; siblings, Cleo Austin, Verna Miller, Jack "Brigham" Scott, Florence Shaffer, Lawrence "Charlie" Scott, Ione Hinze, Beverly Jacobs, Albert "Dutch" Scott, Alberta "Mert" Eckstein and John "Sam" Scott; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Scott and Ella (Hobbs) Scott; and siblings, Thomas Lee Scott, Ruth Marie Scott, Ronald Scott and Wesley "Pete" Scott.
