Raymond Ansle Wortman

February 25, 1922 — August 7, 2003

Raymond Wortman, age 81, of Elgin, died August 7, 2003 at the Grande Ronde Hospital. Dedication of the grave will be held on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. at the Island City Cemetery.


Mr. Wortman was born on February 25, 1922, the son of Charles and Virginia (Carper) Wortman in Enterprise, Oregon. He attended school in Promise and served with the United States Navy during World War II.


On August 19, 1968 he married Nancy Wiglesworth in Pendleton, Oregon. He worked in the logging industry until an accident forced his retirement. They moved to Elgin in 1970.


Mr. Wortman was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He enjoyed reading and family outings. Prior to his accident he enjoyed hunting and fishing.


Survivors include his wife, Nancy Wortman of Elgin; daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Tim Jordan of Union; step-children, Sherry Jones of Portland, Elmer and Sharon Emmons of Pendleton, Judy and Richard Clark of La Grande and Rodney and Frieda Emmons of Portland; sixteen grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; brothers, Bernard Wortman of Kooskia, Idaho, Ersel Wortman of Wallowa and Wes Wortman of Kelso, Washington; sister, Mervene Hardy of Elgin; and other relatives and friends.
