Raymond Jerry Shafer

December 27, 1947 — January 21, 2006

Raymond Jerry Shafer, 59, of La Grande died Jan. 21 at the Portland VA Medical Center. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1511 26th St. A potluck reception will at the Rendezvous RV Park rec room, 2632 Bearco Loop.

Mr. Shafer was born Dec. 27, 1947, in La Grande. He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War and on Oct. 18, 1969, married Betty Cloninger. He worked as a meat cutter at Shop-n-Kart, and making glue-laminated logs in Montana. He was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include four children, Romona Kings of Coos Bay, Kevin Shafer of Gresham, Troy Shafer of Island City and Kim Shafer of La Grande, four grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, contributions will be accepted by the family to help defray health care and funeral costs.
