Ralph V. Carter

September 5, 1918 — September 26, 2006

Ralph V. Carter, 88, of Florence and formerly of La Grande, died Sept. 26. The family will have a private memorial service at a later date.

Mr. Carter was born Sept. 5, 1918,in Henning, Minn., to Clarence and Lillian Carter, the fourth of eight children. He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps and spent four years in the Army and with Coastal Defense Battalion.

In 1959, after a particularly hard Minnesota winter, he and his wife, Florence Mabel Stewart, moved with their four children to Oregon. He worked as a Crook County assessor in Prineville and as a right of way appraiser for the Oregon State Highway Department in La Grande, Portland and Salem. He and his wife retired to Mapleton and enjoyed living on the Siuslaw River. He loved the out doors, meeting new people and playing cribbage, dominos and bingo.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years; children and their spouses, R. Douglas Carter of Shasta City, Calif., Sharon and Allan McGlasson of North Bend, Deborah Lee and fiance Dan White of Eugene and Connie and Lance Barton of Coos Bay; 15 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
