Phyllis Jane Tarter, age 91, passed away at her home in Cove, Oregon on December 24, 2008. She was born October 16, 1917 to Robert Charles and Ruby Brooks (George) Hancock in Cove and spent most of her life in the La Grande-Cove area. She graduated from Cove High School in 1936. On March 5, 1939 she married Victor Lloyd Tarter in Nampa, Idaho. He preceded her in death in 1994.
Mrs. Tarter was employed by the Palomar Club, Falk's ID Store and many years for Dr. Alan Hall. She was a past member of the Maverick's riding club, TOPS, Elks and Eagles Auxiliaries, VFW Auxiliary and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She attended the Cove Methodist Church. Phyllis enjoyed her friends and the outdoors, taking pride in her yard and flowers.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vic, one son, Nels Tarter and a brother Robert Hancock. Survivors include one son and his wife, Charles "Chuck" and Retha Tarter of Madisonville, Kentucky, a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Tarter of Seattle, Washington; three grandchildren, Chamala and David Denny of Pocatello, Idaho, Scott and Hope Tarter of Newbern, Tennessee and Brooks Tarter of Seattle, Washington; five great grandchildren and a cousin, Phil Hancock of Cove, Oregon.
A memorial service for Phyllis Hancock Tarter, who died Dec. 24, 2008, will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cove Cemetery. The Rev. Mike Lamb will officiate. Visitation for family and friends at Cove Sportsman's Club will follow the service.
Contributions in Mrs. Tarter's memory may be made to the Shriner's Hospital or the Cove Quick Response in care of Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center, 1502 7th Street in La Grande.
