Phyllis was born on June 2, 1929, the daughter of Thomas Vernon and Madeline Mae (Owsley) Sherwood in La Grande.
Phyllis was proud to be the 4th generation of the Sherwood/Owsley families to call the Grande Ronde Valley home. She shared many happy stories of growing up on the family homestead located on Foothill Road. Growing up on the ranch fostered her love for all animals. Many stories included her favorite horse, Zeeto, the ranch dogs and the cats in the milking barn looking for a handout of fresh milk.
In 1948 she married Tad Lee Neilson. They had 3 children. During that time she worked in the clothing industry and as a bridal consultant. She very much enjoyed these jobs as it gave her an opportunity for some travel and much shopping.
Later she married William Holderness and resided in Pendleton. After his death, Phyllis and her mother moved back to La Grande.
5 years ago, Phyllis moved to Portland to be near her daughter Candy. Candy and her family were able to provide loving care in their home until her passing.
Survivors include her children, Candy and Steve Mann of Portland, Fred and Christie Neilson of La Grande, and Bill and Shawn Neilson of Geyser, MT; siblings, Jeannie, Tom, and Cheri; eleven grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
