Phillip Karl Hancock

September 28, 1932 — January 25, 2011

Philip Karl Hancock, 78, of Union, died Jan. 25 at his residence. His funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Loveland Funeral Chapel.

Philip Karl Hancock was born Sept. 28, 1932, to Arthur "Art" Philip and Svea Teresia (born in Sweden) Hancock at the old Grande Ronde Hospital in La Grande. Philip was the descendant of two early pioneer families of Cove: his grandparents, William and Mary Gardner (born in London) Hancock of Canada, and Karl and Karin Larson Haag, who moved to North Powder in 1906 from Sweden, and later settled in Cove.

Philip graduated from Cove High School in 1950 and from Eastern Oregon State College in 1953 with a teaching degree. He was a grade school teacher for 40 years.

Philip married Phyllis June on May 12, 1961, in Reno, Nev. Phyllis preceded him in death on Nov. 13, 2000.

He is survived by his children, including stepchildren, Ted, Mike, Mary (Suever) and Dan Moore; daughters, Svea Ross and her husband, Ron, of Union, and Karla Roe and her husband, Greg, of Union. He is also survived by five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and companion, Freda Herron of La Grande.
