Peggy Down, age 78, of Island City and formerly of Wallowa County, died Tuesday, March 18, 2003 peacefully at her home.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. at the Summerville Cemetery with Pastor Roger Cochran of the Trinity Baptist Church officiating. Friends may pay their last respects on Friday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley.
Mrs. Down was born on May 6, 1924, the daughter of Frank and Rhoda Waddingham in Joseph, Oregon. She was educated in Wallowa County and graduated from Enterprise High School. On April 29, 1950 she married Melven Charles Down in La Grande. In 1969 they moved to La Grande and she was bookkeeper for their logging business. Melven preceded her in death on May 25, 1979.
Mrs. Down and her husband were active members of the Eagles, Elks and American Legion. She enjoyed all outdoor activities including: fishing and hunting with her family and friends, picking huckleberries, and gardening. She loved all of her pets.
Survivors include her two sons, John Down and his wife Theresa of Kennewick, Washington and Kenneth Down of La Grande; her dear friend, Doris Cutts of La Grande, and other relatives and friends. Her brothers, Frank and Warren preceded her in death.
Those who wish may make contributions in memory of Mrs. Down to the GRH Home Care Services (Hospice) or the Oregon Cancer Society in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 7th Street, La Grande, Oregon 97850.
