Patrick John Manley, Jr.

May 8, 1917 — September 3, 2002

Patrick John Manley, Jr., age 85, of La Grande, died Tuesday, September 3, 2002 at a local care facility.


A celebration of life will be held on September 28th at Daniels Chapel of the Valley at 11:00 a.m.


Mr. Manley was born on May 8, 1917, the son of Patrick, Sr. and Martha (Groll) Manley in Baltimore, Maryland. He graduated from high school in Baltimore and then enlisted with the United States Army during World War II. He later went into the Army Air Corp and became a pilot. After his honorable discharge he flew with the Air Guard for over 20 years, retiring as a Lt. Colonel in the 1970's. He worked as a machinist until his retirement at age 62.


In 1943 he married Roberta Romig in Del Rio, Texas. They lived in the Portland area for over 30 years. They also lived in Keno, Oregon, Kingman, Arizona and Sisters, Oregon before moving to La Grande 8 years ago.


Mr. Manley enjoyed the outdoors, camping and spear fishing. He was a flight instructor, an avid scuba diver, treasure hunter and picture taker. In his younger years he flew with smoke jumpers.


Survivors include his wife, Roberta Manley of La Grande; children, Pamela Brown of Redmond, Oregon, Michael Manley of Cheshire, Oregon, Susan Manley of La Grande, Oregon, Stephen Manley of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Philip Manley of Elgin, Oregon, Mark Manley of Portland, Oregon, Kathy Grover of La Grande, Oregon and Mary Manley of Lake Grove, Oregon; twenty grandchildren; six great grandchildren and two on the way; and other relatives and friends. A brother, Bob Manley preceded him in death.
