Norma Hanks Noyes

January 3, 1916 — October 27, 2010

Norma Hanks Noyes, 94, formerly of Union County, died Oct. 27 in Murray, Utah, following a short illness. In keeping with Norma's wishes, a graveside service was held in La Grande Oct. 30.

Norma was born Jan. 3, 1916, in Union, the sixth child of Josephine Rebecca Peterson Hanks and William David Hanks. Siblings included LaRue Hanks Smith, Fonda Hanks Hyatt, Melba Hanks Epling, Eldon Hanks and Ilo Hanks.

She attended elementary and high school in La Grande.

Norma was a skilled violinist and as a young woman was known in the Grande Ronde Valley as a performer and teacher. She played her violin well into adulthood as a part of the Grande Ronde Symphony.

Following high school, Norma worked at Bunting Tractor Co.until her marriage to Arlo Zuber Noyes, also of La Grande, on Jan. 1, 1936.

Norma served in many positions over the years in the LDS church, as well as in community activities including service on the La Grande Board of Education from 1960 to 1964. She was recognized as the

La Grande Woman of the Year in 1968 for her years of community service.

Those who knew her say she did flawless needlework and had excellent culinary skills. She enjoyed canning, tailoring and family history.

They say she had a particular pleasure in her later life: to match wits with children and grandchildren playing card games.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents, siblings and husband.

She is survived by her four daughters, 16 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
