Nellie Byer Teeter

September 11, 1906 — July 9, 2006

Nellie Byer Teeter, age 99, of Imbler, died Sunday at a local care facility after a short bout with cancer and recent hip fracture. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, July 12, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at the Summerville Cemetery. Viewing will be held on Tuesday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 7th Street.

Mrs. Teeter was born in La Grande on September 11, 1906, the daughter of August and Margarita Behrens. Her parents both came from Germany. When she was six months old her parents moved from La Grande to a farm in Summerville.

On February 28, 1925 she married A.W. "Bill" Byer. They had two children, Audrey Westenskow and Robert Byer who survive her. She is also survived by grandchildren Mark and Robert Johnston, Carrie Griffin, Connie Banta and Vickie Sampson; several great grandchildren; nephew, Fred L. Behrens and niece, Margaret Yates. Bill passed away in October of 1961. In September 1969 she married Thurman Teeter who passed away in 1972.

Nellie worked at several jobs. She worked for H.L. Wagner and sons for 25 years in the seed business. She clerked at the Imbler Market for 12 years besides other work. She loved needlework, crocheting, needlepoint, quilting and embroidering, and did a lot of reading. She was a 50 year member of the Blue Mtn. Chapter Order of Eastern Star in Elgin. She has lived in Imbler since 1932.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Ed, Art and Fred Behrens and sisters, Eda Wise and Ruby Patterson.

In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to the Oregon Cancer Society or the charity of one's choice in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 7th Street, La Grande, Oregon 97850.
