Nellie Stickney

Nellie Stickney of La Grande died Thursday, November 3, 2005 at the age of 92. A graveside service will be held at the Ravenna Cemetery on Saturday, November 12, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. in Ravenna, Nebraska.

Nellie was born on January 25, 1913, to Stanley and Catherine (Placek) Zoucha at Loup City, Nebraska. She grew up on the farm with nine brothers and three sisters and attended school there. In 1925 the family moved to Ravenna. On October 27, 1928 she married Sherman Stickney in Julesburg, Colorado. They worked and lived in Big Springs, Nebraska, Spokane, Washington, Priest River, Idaho and Ravenna. In 1936 they bought a farm on the Loup River near Poole, Nebraska. They lived there until their retirement in 1973. After their retirement they spent the winters in Coolidge, Arizona. She was a hard working farm wife and all-around good neighbor.

She was a member of the Methodist Church and the Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed bowling and square dancing with friends. On July 18, 1960 he only child, Ruby Jeanne, along with her husband, Bill Pokorney and two sons were killed in an auto accident. Nellie and Sherman then raised the surviving two boys. She moved to La Grande in May of 1999 to be near family.

Survivors include her grandsons that she raised, David Pokorney and wife, Kathy, of Pagosa Springs, Colorado and Daniel Pokorney of La Grande; seven great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren; sisters, Stella Forney of Arvada, Colorado and Sylvia Scott of Hillsboro, Oregon; brother, Carl Zoucha of Grand Island, Nebraska and numerous nieces and nephews.

Nellie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Sherman; only child, Ruby Jeanne and her husband, Bill Pokorney, grandsons, Thomas and William, Jr.; granddaughter-in-law, Linda Pokorney, her parents and eight brothers and one sister.
