Nancy Fitzgerald Stack, 81, of Portland and formerly of La Grande, died peacefully surrounded by family March 2 after a long illness. A Mass of Christian burial will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. A burial service will follow immediately at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Nancy was born Jan. 24, 1928, to Louise and Martin Fitzgerald in Portland.
She was raised in La Grande. After attending Reed College and Eastern Oregon College, she graduated from Washington State University and pursued a career in restaurant management with the Stouffer organization.
She then returned to La Grande to assume management of her grandparents' Sacajawea Hotel with her brother, Roesch Fitzgerald. There she expanded the food service, developing the Sacajawea Coffee Shop and Dining Room.
In 1957, Nancy married Thomas James Stack, MD, and they lived in Portland for the next 49 years until he died in 2006. During those years, the couple had five children.
Survivors include two sons, Dan and John; three daughters and their husbands, Jill and Tom Wimberly, Monica and John Suryan, and Nancy Claire and Art Chapman; and six grandsons.
