Miriam E. May

Miriam E. May, age 81, of La Grande, died January 21, 2009 at the Grande Ronde Hospital. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. at Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center, 1502 7th Street in La Grande. Private interment will be held at the Elgin Cemetery.

Miriam was born on March 30, 1927, the daughter of Rev. Douglas Victor Johnstone and Olive Goldie (Rees) Johnstone in Muncie, Indiana. She finished her education in California and was married and then widowed by the age of 26 with two small children to raise. She worked as a fashion model and did stand up in Vegas when she was young. She did bookkeeping for various businesses before establishing her own business, M & M Bookkeeping Service. She came to Union County five years ago to be near family. She loved puzzles of all kinds, from jigsaw to puzzle books to any type of mind games. She had a fantastic sense of humor and loved to tease those around her.

Survivors include her son, Patrick Michael Higgins of California; daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Russell Millhoff of Elgin; grandchildren, Charles and Kena Millhoff of Texas, David Millhoff of Elgin, currently serving with the United States Army in Iraq, Jeni and Josh Daniel of Washington and Kelli Higgins of California; great grandchildren, Shawna and Melanie Millhoff, Jacob, Noah and Samantha Millhoff and Kristal and Eli Daniel; step-granddaughter, Amanda and her husband, Tim; one great great grandson; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, one brother and son, Daniel Christopher May.

Those who wish may make contributions in her memory to the Alzheimer's Association in care of Daniels~Knopp.
