Mildred "Millie" Ruth (Bicket) Bryant, age 81, of Elgin, died June 8, 2012 at her home. A funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at Harvesters Church of the Nazarene in Elgin at 11:00 a.m. Committal and interment will follow at the Elgin Cemetery. Millie was born October 27, 1930 at Conway Springs, Kansas. She was 1 of 5 children born to Henry Howard and Alice Gray (Marks) Bicket. During her childhood her family lived in Kansas, Bonner's Ferry, Idaho, McMinnville, Oregon, La Grande, Oregon and Beavercreek, Oregon. Millie graduated from La Grande High School in 1948. She married George Leon Bryant of Beavercreek on May 29, 1953.
Millie and George had four children and they owned and operated the only grade A goat dairy in Oregon for 12 years, while Millie also worked full-time as a bookkeeper at Small Parts Manufacturing in Portland. In 1975 Millie and George bought their ranch on Clark Creek. Millie worked alongside George on the ranch while also managing the Elgin Medical Center for 10 years. She did much of the baling, all of the record keeping and cared for her grandchildren. She was active in her church and Union County Cattlewomen for many years.
Millie was chosen Agriculture Woman of the Year in 2003, was Cattlewoman of the Year and was a co-recipient, with George, of the Outstanding Cooperator of the Year from the Union Soil and Water Conservation District in 2001. Millie's biggest contribution was that of loving wife, mother and grandma, who played a significant part in her grandchildren's lives.
Millie is survived by her husband of 59 years, George Bryant of Elgin; her children and their spouses, Michael and Vicki Bryant of Beavercreek; Joni and Mark Simmons of Salem; Melanie and Todd McClure of Elgin and Lori and Brian Herron of Elgin; ten grandchildren, Zane Bryant, Luke Bryant, Carly Bryant, Micheal Bryant, Lindy Schweiger, Holly Simmons, Cody Herron, Kari Hagedorn, Erin McClure, Kit Evans; ten great grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Bob Hoffman of Beavercreek; brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Shirley Bicket of Beavercreek and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Evelyn Woolery and Hazel Rush.
