Maxine Lillian Smith

September 18, 1921 — July 18, 2008

Maxine Lillian Smith, 86, of La Grande, died at a local care center July 18.

There will be no services as per family request.

Maxine was born on Sept. 18, 1921, in Weiser, Idaho, to Dewey and Jacqueline (Jeffries) Smith. She graduated from Weiser High School and in 1955 married Sherman Gardner, with whom she had two children, but later divorced. In 1961 she was married to Charles T. Smith until his death in 1995. Charles was an iron worker and they traveled extensively. Maxine moved to La Grande in 1996.

She was a member of the Elks, Eagles and St. Marks Episcopal Church in Madras, and danced with the Umbrella Girls in La Grande. Her hobbies were gardening, bingo, golf and especially fishing.

Maxine was preceded in death by two brothers, Don Lee and Carol Lee, and one grandson, Rod Squire. She is survived by a sister Marilyn Goodman of Nampa, Idaho; her children, Scarlotte (Jerry) Gibson of La Grande; Mike (Linda) Gardener of Madras; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
