Maxine Bertine Nurmi, age 80, of La Grande, died Thursday, June 20, 2002 at a local care facility.
Services will be held on Monday, June 24, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley with Pastor Rob Collins of Calvary Chapel officiating. Committal and interment will follow at the Hillcrest Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Daniels Chapel of the Valley.
Mrs. Nurmi was born on December 16, 1921, the daughter of Jesse and Sylvia Bell (Holmes) Turnbow in La Grande. She attended Central Elementary School and graduated from La Grande High School. In 1938 she graduated from Drapers School of Commerce. On October 1, 1942 she married William Raymond Nurmi in La Grande.
Mrs. Nurmi enjoyed drawing and painting in oils and watercolors. She liked knitting, crocheting, ceramics and other crafts. In her younger years she liked to hunt and fish. She always described herself as "My Mon's girl and my Dad's Tom-Boy". She was active with the Calvary Chapel in La Grande.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Elton Ray and Isabel Nurmi of Newport News, Virginia; four grandchildren, Debbie Chapman, Brenda Carter, Elton Nurmi, Jr. and Steve Nurmi; two great grandchildren, Brett and Travis Chapman; and other relatives and friends.
