Mary Morton

October 31, 1941 — January 28, 2011

Mary Morton, 69, formerly of La Grande, died Jan. 28 from complications of pneumonia and aortic heart valve failure. An open house was held in Oregon City Jan. 30. A service in La Grande will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Loveland Funeral Chapel. A reception will follow at First Christian Church.

Mary was born Oct. 31, 1941, and raised in Colorado in 1941 with her seven siblings. In 1959, she married Virgil Morton Sr. and eventually settled in Eastern Oregon in 1966. Mary and Virgil raised six children while he worked at the Boise Cascade mill and she worked as a waitress in various restaurants and did administrative work in a couple of offices in addition to being a full-time mom and homemaker.

Mary moved to Salem and Eugene on two occasions to live close to her children and eventually settled in the Portland area to live by several of her grandchildren in 2004.

Mary is survived by three of her brothers, Vernon, Woody and Carl; and two sisters, Verneal and Pam, who affectionately called her "Mary Beth." She is also survived by her six children, Virgil Morton Jr., Terry Morton, Thelma Jacoby, Robert Morton, Shawnda Horn and Kevin Morton; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Providence Willamette Falls Hospital Foundation in care of Loveland Funeral Chapel.
