Marie Estella Woolf Singleton

February 11, 1919 — March 5, 2010

Marie Estella Woolf Singleton, 91, of Island City, died March 5. At her request there will be no funeral. A private family burial and a memorial at her daughter's home will be held later.

Marie was born Feb. 11, 1919, to Raymond and Maude (Barnes) Woolf in Enterprise. Her family later moved to La Grande, where she attended school.

She went to work for the N.K. West ranch, where she met Jack Singleton. They were married June 2, 1938, in Walla Walla.

Marie was a marvelous cook. Her daughter always says her husband married her for her mother's cooking. She also enjoyed sewing and crocheting. She made drapes for people and businesses, including Globe Furniture, and an afghan for every member of her family. She also could make beautiful embroidered clothing. When her daughter married, she made her wedding dress, the bridesmaids' dresses and her own dress, plus the wedding cake.

One of the highlights of Marie's life was a trip to Disneyland with her brother. After her husband died, she want on several trips with her daughter and son-in-law. Her son-in-law built her a small house next to his and her daughter's home in Island City so she could be close to them.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Janelle and Howard DePriest of Island City; brother, Clifford Woolf of Pendleton; three grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, her husband, a sister and brother and her parents.
