Marguerite Frances Winters

February 15, 1918 — October 11, 2005

Marguerite Frances Winters, 87, of Yakima and formerly of La Grande died Oct. 11 from pancreatic cancer.

She was born Feb. 15,1918, in Dallas, Ore., to Philip and Ella (Hauser)Winters. A granddaughter of early settlers from Germany in Yamhill County, she attended schools in Walla Walla, Hermiston and La Grande. She graduated in 1935 from La Grande High School.

Miss Winters attended Eastern Oregon College. She worked at the college as a librarian and later was employed as a secretary for the U.S. Forest Service.

She was a longtime resident of La Grande, but in 1996 she moved to Yakima to be closer to her sister, Roberta Leonard, and her nephew and his wife, Lowell and Jan Leonard.

She enjoyed gardening and sewing. As a teenager she started making clothing for her two sisters and herself. All kinds of sewing appealed to her, and later she made doll clothes for her niece. She especially enjoyed embroidering, knitting and crocheting, and caring for her pets.

She is survived by her sister, Roberta Leonard of Yakima; brother Eugene Winters and sister-in-law Leona of Eugene; and several nephews and a niece.

Her parents, sister, Phyllis and brother Lowell died earlier.

At Miss Winter's request, there will be no memorial service. She will be buried at Hillcrest Cemetery in La Grande.
