Margaret Marie Swope

Margaret Marie Swope, age 85, of La Grande, died Tuesday, November 18, 2003 at a local care facility. A celebration of life was held on Friday, November 21, 2003 at Daniels Chapel of the Valley. Private interment will be held at the Pilot Butte Cemetery in Bend.

Mrs. Swope was born on April 4, 1918, the youngest of eleven children born to Francis "Frank" and Margaret M. (Andrews) Delsmann in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. She helped her brothers on the family farm and worked in a textile mill in Wisconsin before making a trip to Oregon. She loved Oregon so much that she remained and soon married Robert "Smoky" Swope in Salem. They lived in Washington and California for periods of time but always returned to Oregon. They lived in Bend when Mr. Swope died on February 3, 1981. In 1981 she moved to La Grande to be with her daughter. She worked for a time with her daughter at The La Grande Bible and Supply.

Mrs. Swope was a member of New Life Center. She loved reading and animals, especially dogs and goats. She enjoyed crocheting and embroidering items to sell.

Survivors include her children Barbara Abbott of Summerville and Marshall "Ted" Swope of Yucca, Arizona; step-children, Ester Liebemow of Forest Grove and Robert Swope of Salem; four grandchildren, Bonnie Campagna of Baton Rogue, Louisiana, Bette Dalineof Eugene, Tom Swope and Steven Swope, both of Umatilla; nine great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in Wisconsin and Oregon; and other relatives and friends.
