Margaret Lucille Eckstein

January 29, 1916 — May 9, 2006

Margaret Lucille Eckstein, 90 of La Grande and formerly of Elgin, died Tuesday, May 9, 2006 at a local care center. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Margaret Lucille Eckstein was born on January 29, 1916, the daughter of Carl and Katherine (Darr) Cowan in Summerville, Oregon. Margaret attended Dry Creek School near Summerville and on November 24, 1933, she married Jack Eckstein. Jack worked construction and later worked in the lumber industry while Margaret worked for the post office and also as a waitress. The couple lived in Elgin until 1962, Steamboat Springs, Colorado until 1976, Milton-Freewater for a time, before returning to Elgin and finally settling in La Grande. Margaret was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, the Rebekahs, Pythian Sisters and the Royal Neighbors. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and loved to drive.

Survivors include her daughters, Phyllis Eckstein of La Grande and Joyce and son-in-law Andy Moore of Albuquerque, New Mexico; two grandsons; one great- granddaughter; several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. Her husband, Jack Eckstein and a brother Raymond Cowan all preceded her in death.
