January 17, 1915 — May 14, 2011

Margaret Jeanne Carroll, 96, of Springfield and formerly of Elgin, died May 14 of age-related causes. Jeanne will be buried in Bellingham, Wash., next to her husband.

She was born Jan. 17, 1915, to Joseph and Margaret Fyfe Houghton in Bellingham. She grew up in Bellingham, spent her summers at Lake Samish and graduated from Western Washington College with a teaching degree.

Jeanne was trained as a ballerina and danced in recitals. She met George Carroll while teaching in Entiat, Wash., shortly after graduating from college. They married in 1939. The couple moved to Elgin where they raised three children. They lived in Elgin for 20 years. She was a teacher and had a dance studio. After her children grew up, the couple moved to Washington State where they developed farmland in Mattawa.

Upon retirement, they moved to Wenatchee. After George died, Jeanne moved to Springfield to be near her daughter and family.

She is survived by a daughter, Sandra Cochran of Springfield; son, Joe Carroll of San Diego and Pat Carroll of Lynnwood, Wash.; several grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
