Makayla Dorothy Hansen

June 12, 1997 — March 11, 2011

Makayla Dorothy Hansen, 13, of Elgin, died March 11 at the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto, Calif. Her memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Church of the Nazarene in Elgin.

Makayla was born June 12, 1997, to Jamey Hansen and Linda (Phillips) Lawrence at Hillsboro. She lived in Elgin and attended Stella Mayfield Grade School.

She enjoyed basketball and baseball. Her favorite sport was playing dodge ball even though she was not supposed to. She loved making movies, reading, four-wheeling, biking, writing songs and scripts, camping and taking long walks.

During her short life, she received several awards including Beads of Courage and multiple academic awards. One of her most notable achievements was when she designed a pair of Nike basketball shoes that were auctioned off, earning $16,000. Her contributions earned a total of $21,000 for the Doernbecher Children's Hospital. She got to meet her favorite basketball player and hero, Shaquille O'Neal, twice.

Makayla is survived by her mother, Linda Lawrence of Elgin; her father, James Hansen of Joseph; siblings and their spouses, R.J. and Kim Lawrence of Oregon City, Donald Phillips of Fort Bliss, Texas, and Jan Hansen of La Grande; aunts and uncles; and grandparents, George and Judy Phillips of Pendleton.

She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Dorothy Phillips; and two sisters, Dion Lawrence and Charlene Lawrence.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made to Stella Mayfield Grade School
